MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - Two goals in the final 16 minutes lifted No. 3-seed Saint Thomas (Fla.) over No. 6-seed Thomas, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon at STU Soccer Field in The Sun Conference Women's Soccer Championship quarterfinals, presented by Commerce Bank.
"We fought hard for 90 minutes," Night Hawks' coach
Julie Orlowski said. "As always against the Bobcats, it was a physical battle. They were able to find the net with their opportunities. Unfortunately we did not."
Saint Thomas (12-2-1) struck first in the 25th minute when Sarah Lyppert Thomsson (4) scored from 35 yards out.
Thomas (7-8-2) tied the affair in the 67th minute when
Taylor Hults (4) beat Bobcat netminder Cristina Garwacki following an assist from
Olivia Taylor.
"Taylor continues to improve every time she steps on the field," Orlowski said.
However, Kortney Hinden (6) scored in the 74th and 87th minutes to advance the Bobcats on to the tournament semifinals at 10th-ranked and No. 2-seed Southeastern (Fla.) on Tuesday, Nov. 7. Amyah Banks assisted on Hinden's first goal, while Eva Castano Candela and Amanda Gordon helped on her second.
Hinden ended with four shots on goal.
Hults totaled three shots on goal, while
Anna Gray tallied two.
Garwacki (12-2-1) made five of her team's six saves in 90 minutes.
Thomas goalkeeper
Kara Houston (6-8-2) came up with nine saves in 90 minutes.
The Green and White held an edge in corner kicks, 5-4.
Saturday was the final match for seven Thomas seniors -
Taylor,
Linnea Roivas,
Aliya Callaghan,
Kaleigh Premo,
Rebekah Wiltshire,
Madison Buechner and
Sierra Robinson.
"Seeing the season end for our seven seniors was very bitter sweet, bitter for how it ended but sweet when you look at all they have accomplished in their time here at Thomas," Orlowski said. "It's amazing how much they have grown as players and more importantly as women. They have left a tremendous legacy here.
"I also wanted to give a shout out to all our fans who made the trip. Your support means so much. Thank you."
