Night Hawks Spilt with No. 17 Middle Georgia

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University baseball team split games with No. 17 Middle Georgia State University, 7-5 and 12-5, on Saturday at Varnedoe Stadium in the 2017 season opener.

The Night Hawks wrap up the series with the Knights 1 p.m. Sunday at Varnedoe Stadium.

GAME ONE

Tanner Elsberd started the scoring for TU with a double that scored Tanner Long and Taylor Westbrook in the first inning. Reed Melcolm hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Elsbernd and put TU up 3-0.

In the second, Taylor Westbrook doubled to center field that scored Jalbert Melo and extended the Night Hawks lead to 4-0.

The Knights scored two runs in the third inning that cut the TU lead to 4-2.

Alan Mocahbee knocked a grand slam in the fourth inning that put MGA up 7-4 and proved to be the game winner.

Elsbernd singled in the seventh that scored Westbrook.

Jordan Martin threw four innings with seven runs, five earned, on seven hits, while Holden Alexander pitched two innings with one hit. Shane Davis threw one inning of relief with no runs or hits.

GAME TWO

Mocahbee hit his second homerun of the day in the first inning and put MGA up 3-0.

Long singled in the first that scored Melo. Levi Hollingsworth drew a walk that scored Westbrook and slimmed the MGA lead to 3-2.

In the third, Long doubled and scored Westbrook that tied the game at 3-3. Hollingsworth singled and drove in Long that put TU up 4-3. Gavin Murphy reached on an error that scored Elsbernd.

In the top half of the fourth, the Knights scored and cut the TU lead to 5-4. In the top of the fourth, Melcolm singled and drove in Westbrook that became the game winning run.

MGA plated it's last run of the game in the fifth.

The Night Hawks scored three runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings.

David Wood picked up the first win of the season on four innings pitched with four runs on six hits. Josh Roye threw two innings with one run on two hits, while Jacob Moye pitched one inning with no runs or hits.
