Strong Second Quarter Pushes Night Hawks past Johnson & Wales

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University women's basketball team topped Johnson & Wales University (Fla.), 70-60, on Saturday at the TU Gymnasium. TU held a 42-18 points in the paint advantage in the game.

The Night Hawks went to 7-9, 4-4 in The Sun Conference, while the Wildcats fell to 2-17, 1-6 in TSC. TU plays Ave Maria 2 p.m. Saturday in Ave Maria, Fla.

Aianna Anderson led the Night Hawks with 13 points, while J'Nyiah Daniels and Micah Garvin both provided 10. Daycia Bandy and Garvin both led the team with eight rebounds.

JWU jumped out to an 11-2 lead to start the game, it's largest of the game. The Night Hawks responded with a 9-0 run and tied the game at 11-11. TU ended the first quarter on a 7-2 run and held a 22-18 lead after the first period.

The Night Hawks opened a 42-18 lead on a 20-0 run to start the second quarter. TU outscored the Wildcats 24-5 in the second quarter and held a 46-23 lead at the break.

Tess Wright gave TU a 51-25 lead on a made three-pointer in the third quarter, it's largest lead of the game. The Wildcats went on an 11-1 run and cut the TU lead to 53-39. Garvin ended the quarter with two made free throws that gave the Night Hawks a 60-46 lead into the final quarter.

Anderson converted a layup with four minutes to play that gave TU a 66-52 lead. Daniels sealed the game for the Night Hawks on a free throw with two minutes to play that put TU up 67-52.

TU forced 23 turnover during the game.
