Copeland’s Stick Back Gives TU an 83-82 Win over Western Ontario

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Thomas University women's basketball team pulled off an 83-82 win over the University of Ontario (Can.) Wednesday at the Fernandez Family Center in the St. Thomas December Classic. De'Audra Copeland collected a rebound and put back off a missed free throw in the last minute of the game. TU had four players score in double figures in the game.

The Night Hawks went to 5-6, while the Mustangs fell to 5-4 on the year. TU plays sixth-ranked Campbellsville (Ky.) in the second game of the classic on Thursday at noon.

J'Nyiah Daniels led the Night Hawks with 24 points, while Kriza Allen led the team with seven rebounds and five steals. Arianna Anderson and Micah Garvin both added 13 points, while Tess Wright provided 10 points.

Daniels gave the Night Hawks an 8-6 lead in the first quarter with two free throws. The Mustangs responded with a 13-1 run and took a 19-9 lead. TU fought back and Wright tied the game at 19-19 with a three-pointer. Western Ontario held a 25-20 lead after the first period.

The Mustangs went on a 7-2 run in the second quarter and opened a 46-31 lead. The Night Hawks ended the second half on a 4-0 run, while Western Ontario led 50-39 at the break.

Victoria Heine gave the Mustangs a 56-41 lead in the second half, their largest lead of the game. The Night Hawks exploded with a 17-1 run and took a 58-57 lead with three minutes left in the third quarter. TU held Western scoreless for eight minutes in the third quarter and outscored Western 25-12 in the period. TU Hawks took a 64-62 lead into the final quarter.

TU opened the fourth on a 4-0 run and took a 68-62 lead, it's largest lead of the game. Mackenzie Pucklicz tied the game for Western at 76-76 with four and a half minutes left in the game. Daniels went to the free throw line with 52 seconds remaining in the game. She missed both free throws before Copeland collected the rebound and completed the stick back that gave TU an 83-80 lead.

The Night Hawks forced a season-high 31 turnovers in the game.
