TU Tops Coastal Georgia in Season Opener

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University women's basketball team outgunned Coastal Georgia, 82-71, on Monday at the TU Gymnasium in the 2016-17 season opener. Four Night Hawks scored in double figures.

Thomas hosts Truett-McConnell University (Ga.) 6 p.m. Thursday at the TU Gymnasium.

Micah Garvin led the team in scoring with 19 points and added five rebounds, while J'Nyiah Daniels provided 16 points. Arianna Anderson produced a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds in the game.

The Night Hawks went on a 7-0 run and took a 12-3 lead in the first quarter. The Mariners responded with a 6-0 run and cut the TU lead to 12-9. The Night Hawks closed the quarter with a 4-0 run and held a 16-9 lead.

The Mariners went on an 8-0 spurt in the second quarter and tied the game at 23-23. The two teams traded buckets with the game tied at 31-31. Tess Wright sank a three-pointer right before halftime and gave the Night Hawks a 34-32 lead into the locker room.

TU went on a 5-0 run in the third period and opened a 43-36 lead. Coastal Georgia closed the quarter on a 12-2 run and took a 52-50 lead into the final period.

In the fourth quarter, the two teams traded baskets with Coastal holding a slim 58-57 lead. The Night Hawks went on an 11-2 run and held a 68-60 lead with four minutes to play. TU then went on a 7-2 run and extended the lead to 75-64. The Night Hawks closed the game with five free throws.
