Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Night Hawks Crown the Royals, Win 72-49

Jason Hendrix | Sports Information Director | @JasonHendrixSID

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Identity was the focus of tonight's 72-49 victory en favor of the Thomas University women's basketball team over the Lady Royals of Warner University.  All season, head coach Coretta Brown's squad has struggled to find that niche and in their last two games out have finally found just that:  an identity.

The Lady Night Hawks are dominant force on the boards.  They lead the NAIA Division II with 53.344 a game, and that reputation, and new found identity, has finally taken its shape.

Thomas got off to a quick 13-9 lead after the first quarter.  The Lady Night Hawks, who struggled shooting 2-for-15 from behind the arch in the first half, finally found their range over the next three quarters to convert seven of their final 15 attempts.

The Hunter Green and White received multiple second chance opportunities and capitalized to go up 28-14 at the intermission.

Warner gave up six consecutive turnovers midway through the third quarter that saw Thomas take a 22 point, 44-22, advantage at its height converting on the Lady Royals' miscues.

The Lady Royals scrapped together their best showing in the fourth quarter of play where they scored 23 points, the highest of any quarter on the night.

While the comeback effort was valiant in stride, the early gap produced by the Lady Night Hawks was too much to overcome.  In the end, Thomas was victorious taking the 72-49 win.

Thomas, who had four Lady Night Hawks in double figures, were paced by senior forward Bria Joyner-Williams.  The Fayetteville, Ga., native netted 18 points and brought down eight boards.  Bra'shey Ali returned to usual form for Thomas picking up her 10th double-double of the season dropping 10 points while pulling down 11 rebounds.

Warner had two Lady Royals in double figures as I'munique Green led the way with 11 points and six rebounds.

The Lady Night Hawks (9-9, 4-4 TSC) are back in action on Thursday, Jan. 28 when they travel to Miami Gardens, Fla., to face Florida Memorial University in Sun Conference action. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
