THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Consecutive one-goal victories in the final two matches of August made the month a successful one for the Thomas University women's soccer team, which now boasts a 2-2 record after playing one of the most difficult early-season schedules in the country.
Â
After traveling to Montgomery and leaving with an impressive 3-2 victory over an opponent receiving Top 25 votes, the Lady Night Hawks returned to Thomasville for the first time in 2015 and treated the home fans to a thrilling 3-2 comeback win over Brenau.
Â
The match saw the TU women fall behind 2-0 after just twenty minutes of play before mounting a furious rally to dispatch the Golden Tigers in double overtime.Â
Alleah Long scored the match's opening goal,
Adrianna Johnson equalized, and
Olivia Taylor provided the winner in Thomas' second consecutive victory.
Â
The focus now shifts to a different, much-improved opponent as the calendar turns to September, as the Lady Night Hawks will make the trek to Macon on Friday to face Middle Georgia State. The Lady Knights are sure to be brimming with confidence after starting the season 2-0, just one year removed from posting two total wins en route to a 2-11-3 record. The sophomore duo of Micayla Crenshaw and Samantha Silva has provided MGSU with more than enough offensive firepower to beat USC-Beaufort and SCAD-Savannah to open the season, as the two forwards have tallied a combined six goals in two matches.
Â
The 2014 season was difficult for Middle Georgia State in terms of wins and losses, but the Lady Knights played several quality opponents closely, a fact that opposing teams shouldn't overlook. MGSU lost to three ranked opponents by a combined six goals a season ago, including a 2-1 loss to 16th-ranked Brenau. This season, the Lady Knights have already defeated a SCAD-Savannah squad that finished third in the Sun Conference last year.
Â
Thomas should not be short on confidence, either, as the team enters September riding a wave of momentum. The TU women possess one of the youngest teams in the Sun Conference this season, but the team has seemingly progressed quickly against several quality opponents.
Â
The Lady Night Hawks put forth a complete performance for the final 80 minutes of Sunday's victory, the team's second consecutive win. Starting faster and sustaining a quality level of play over the course of an entire match will be an emphasis on Friday afternoon, when the TU women look for a third straight win.
