Lady Night Hawks Seek Road Consistency

Jacob Dennis| Sports Information Intern | @jakeyd_8

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – After a season sweep of Auburn-Montgomery helped the Thomas University women's soccer team finish the home, non-conference portion of its season unbeaten, the Lady Night Hawks will hit the road for a pair of challenging Sun Conference matches in Miami Gardens, Fla.

Head coach Julie Orlowski's young team has played a challenging non-conference schedule, but it is at this juncture of the season that the Lady Night Hawks could start to reap the benefits.  Road matches versus No. 10 Mobile, No. 9 William Carey and (RV) Auburn-Montgomery, the latter of which Thomas University won, provided the largely inexperienced TU women valuable match time against quality competition, but the team was undoubtedly most impressive at home.

At the friendly confines of the TU Soccer Complex, the Lady Night Hawks have posted a 2-0 record, including a thrilling comeback win over Brenau on Aug. 30, but the team holds just a 1-4 mark in games away from Thomasville.  The Lady Night Hawks will look to change that on Friday.

Thomas' first match of the road trip will come on Fri., Sept. 25 against Florida Memorial.  The Lady Lions have struggled to the tune of a 1-4 record to start the 2015 season after going 3-14 last year, but a large portion of the team's difficulties can be attributed to youth.  Eleven of the Lady Lions' 23 rostered players last season were freshmen, so FMU's final record wasn't surprising.  The more experienced version of Florida Memorial women's soccer will expect to take another step toward competing in The Sun Conference this season.

The Lady Lions' lone win thus far was a 6-0 shutout of Trinity Baptist College on Sept. 4.

The Lady Night Hawks' next opponent, the No. 23 St. Thomas Lady Bobcats, propelled themselves into the Top 25 after an impressive six-game stretch to open the season.  The Lady Bobcats' have already lost three times, but that statistic does not come close to revealing the team's true talent level, as each of STU's defeats occurred in overtime to ranked competition.

The Lady Bobcats opened the season with one-goal losses to No. 10 Mobile and No. 9 William Carey before falling 2-1 at home to No. 13 Hastings on Sept. 7.  St. Thomas has yet to play a road game this season.

After managing just 26 goals in 16 matches (1.63 goals per game) last season, the Lady Bobcats' offense has seemingly improved, as the team has scored 16 goals in 6 matches (2.67 goals per game) so far in 2015.

Five of the Lady Night Hawks next six matches will come away from the TU Soccer Complex, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel.  After concluding this stretch of road matches, Orlowski's side will return home for the final four contests of the 2015 season.

Game times against Florida Memorial and No. 23 St. Thomas are set for 3:00 p.m. and 12:00 p.m. on Sept. 25 and Sept. 27, respectively.
