Thomas Drops Season Opener to No. 10 Rams

Jason Hendrix | Sports Information Director | @JasonHendrixSID

MOBILE, Ala. – The upset-minded Lady Night Hawks battled through their season opener against 10th ranked Mobile Lady Rams this afternoon falling 2-0.

The opening half of action was a battle of defensive prevention by the Lady Night Hawks and an offensive shootout for Mobile.  The Lady Rams, who made 25 shot attempts during the contest, made camp near Thomas' goal throughout the first half.  However, TU's goalkeeper Sara-Ann Hartley stood strong.  The Lady Night Hawks continued their lockdown defense in the first half to send the contest into a scoreless match at intermission.

In the second half of play, the Lady Rams made the first strike at the net scoring in 58th minute.  Forward Katie Compton received a pass from the far post from Saskia Adriance and finished with a low chip shot to the left corner, giving Mobile the 1-0 lead.

Fifteen minutes later, Mobile struck again scoring on a free kick by Leah Corse from 20 yards out.  The Lady Night Hawks continued to battle back but fell short at the buzzer, falling 2-0.

"Early in the season, we do not measure successes in wins and losses; especially with a young team," stated head coach Julie Orlowski.  "We battled really well for 50 minutes and showed ourselves how talented we can be.  Unfortunately, experience and fitness came into play, and Mobile controlled play for the bulk of the second half.  Sara-Ann Hartley was the woman of the match for keeping the game so close with several saves."

The Lady Night Hawks return to action on Sat., August 22, when they travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., to face ninth-ranked William Carey University.  First touch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. eastern time, 5:00 p.m. central time.  Live stats for Saturday's matchup can be accessed by clicking here.
