THOMASVILLE, Ga. – A nine point second half offensive effort doomed the Lady Night Hawks in what was potentially a solid victory over Webber International University this afternoon. While Thomas had a formidable lead, 37-17, at the half, fifteen turnovers and a rugged 3-for-28 shooting from the field halted the Lady Night Hawks' pursuit of victory in the second half leaving Thomas with a crushing 50-46 loss to the Lady Warriors.
The Lady Night Hawks took a commanding lead in the first half holding the Lady Warriors to less than twenty points. Webber, who outscored Thomas 33-9 in the second frame, started the game off with a 4-0 lead and then let go of the reigns allowing TU to take over on the defensive boards and shooting. The Lady Night Hawks forced inaccurate attempts at the goal and shut the Lady Warriors down using a 1-3-1 defensive set.
Heading into intermission, the Lady Night Hawks' confidence continued with
Tess Wright connecting on three consecutive three pointers to cap a 13-0 run.
The tale of two halves was present, however, with Webber tying the game with four minutes remaining and then taking the 46-44 lead in the final minute of the game. Webber would close out the contest with an 8-2 run to capture the 50-46 victory over the Lady Night Hawks.
Head coach
Coretta Brown reflected on today's game, "Tough loss! I thought we gave up too many offensive rebounds (20) and didn't convert enough free throws when we had a high percentage chance at the open net. It's hard to win a ball game with those kind of numbers. We had a great crowd, and I am very appreciative and thankful for those who came out and supported our Pink Out Night and the battle for awareness and cure of cancer."
Sophomore guard
Kerregan Poe-Cochran lead the Lady Night Hawks with 12 points, six assists, and two steals in the losing effort.
Thomas drops to 9-12, 6-6 in TSC play, while Webber improves to 17-4, 10-3 on the year.
The Lady Night Hawks return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 10 when they host Sun Conference rival Southeastern University in a White Out Night. Thomas University student-athletes, coaches, and staff will be dressed in all white attire and encourage all spectators to do so as well. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
