THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The fourth-seeded Thomas University women's soccer team picked up its 10th win of the season and fifth consecutive match victory this afternoon overcoming a 2-0 deficit to defeat fifth-seeded Webber International 3-2. The victory puts Thomas in the TSC Final Four for the second time in program history.
"We've talked all year about working hard for each other and focusing on the things that are important," stated head coach
Julie Orlowski. "We knew we had a lot of good looks in the first half and that we had plenty of time to respond. We began to focus on what was important and the opportunities that were going to come."
Webber International took the 1-0 lead in the closing minutes of the first half when Jenna Murphy broke away down the left side of the box and flipped a left-footed shot over the back left shoulder of Thomas' keeper
Sara-Ann Hartley.
Just two minutes into the second half, the Lady Warriors doubled their advantage to 2-0 when Janel Ebanks broke through Thomas' defensive backline and launched a shot to the lower right corner of the net.
In the 54th minute, the comeback trail began for the Lady Night Hawks. Thomas would cut Webber's lead in half when a corner from
Alyssa Denton was deflected off a Webber defender to freshman
Alleah Long who touched the ball to
Mackenzie Dolan for a one-timer into the back right of the net. Ten minutes later, Dolan was fouled by Philippa Wilson inside the box to set up a penalty kick. Dolan lined up the shot and chipped it in to tie the game at 2-2.
Determined to survive and move on, the Thomas offense continued to push chances at the net in the final 10 minutes of the match and finally capitalized. Freshman speedster
Rebekah Wiltshire navigated her way down the far sideline and crossed a ball to the right side of the box to
Adrianna Johnson. Johnson immediately headed the cross into the upper right corner of the net to give Thomas the 3-2 lead and eventual victory.
Orlowski concluded, "When the game was on the line, all four seniors were clutch. Dolan and Johnson came up huge for us with the goals, Hartley made unbelieve saves, and Denton's leadership of the defensive backline was incredible. I couldn't be more proud of how far this team has come."
The Lady Night Hawks now continue their magical run into the semifinals of the Sun Conference tournament. Thomas will travel to Savannah, Ga., to face top-seeded SCAD-Savannah on Friday, Nov. 13. First touch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
