THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Some seasons are just about wins, others are about surviving and moving on. This year, the Thomas University women's soccer team has done both and in Cinderella-like fashion. In the Sun Conference's semifinal match, the fourth-seeded Lady Night Hawks upset the regular season TSC champion and top-seeded Lady Bees of SCAD-Savannah 3-2. The victory sweeps the season series for Thomas as they also defeated the Lady Bees 3-2 on October 28 in Thomasville.
"We are a team that works hard for each other all over the field," stated head coach
Julie Orlowski.
SCAD (12-5-2) jumped on the board first in the 19th minute when Laerke Michaelsen connected with Janelle Morgan who blasted a shot from 35 yards out into the back of the net. Thomas would strike back in the 27th minute when
Linnea Roivas and First-Team All-Conference selection
Mackenzie Dolan combined to connect with freshman speedster
Rebekah Wiltshire for a one-timer to equalize the match.
After a medley of shots by both squads in the winding minutes of the half, the two entered the intermission knotted at 1-1.
It took just under nine minutes into the second half for Thomas to take the 2-1 advantage. Senior Second Team All-Conference selection
Adrianna Johnson converted a corner kick from the far right side of the pitch that hooked straight in the net off the Lady Bees' keeper.
Just 12 minutes later, Johnson would net an insurance goal for the surging Lady Night Hawks to give them 3-1 advantage with 20:13 left in the contest. The Lady Night Hawks won a corner that set
Alyssa Denton, Second Team All-Conference selection, up for the kick. Johnson located the deflected ball just outside the box and rifled a hooked ball into the net.
While SCAD made a valiant comeback attempt with a goal in the 76th minute, narrowing the gap to 3-2, time was not on the Lady Bees' side as the horn sounded, handing Thomas the 3-2 victory and berth into the Sun Conference Championship match. The victory is Thomas' sixth win in a row.
Orlowski concluded, "Our leaders are finding ways to win. Our youth has matured and has turned in to a strength of our team. Proud of what the ladies did today."
The Lady Night Hawks (11-8, 6-4 TSC) now continue their magical run into the Sun Conference tournament final. Thomas will face second-seeded Keiser University on Sat., Nov. 14. Earlier this afternoon, Keiser defeated St. Thomas 6-1 to earn a spot in the conference championship match. First touch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
