NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – The Thomas University women's soccer team was dominant today in the Lady Night Hawks' 1-0 victory over Sun Conference rival Johnson & Wales. While
Adrianna Johnson's goal in the 57th minute ultimately gave Thomas the victory, it was the defense that held strong in today's match.
The first half was a stalemate between both the Lady Wildcats and Thomas ending in a scoreless period. Each squad made valiant surges at the goal but both keepers,
Sara-Ann Hartley (TU) and Jenna Boersma (JWU), and the TU defensive back line stood strong.
Coming out of the half, the Lady Night Hawks fired three shots in a row, picking up three consecutive corners. With the ball continuously in their half of the pitch, Thomas would finally break the silence in the 57th minute when senior
Adrianna Johnson netted the lone goal of the match.
The Thomas defensive line played an integral part in today's match. They held the Lady Wildcats to just three shots on the afternoon with only one of them having to be saved by keeper
Sara-Ann Hartley late in the second half.
"Today was a quality 90 minutes. JWU challenged us tactically, so I was very pleased with our ability to possess the ball," stated head coach
Julie Orlowski. "Finally a shutout! A clean slate!
Alyssa Denton and
Jennifer Clyde kept things organized in the back."
With the win, Thomas improves to 5-7, 2-3 TSC, on the year while the Lady Wildcats drop to 6-6, 3-2 TSC.
The Lady Night Hawks return to action on Sunday, Oct. 11, when they travel to West Palm Beach, Fla., to face Sun Conference rival and third-ranked Keiser University. First touch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
