Night Hawks Sweep Eagles with Back-to-Back Shutouts

THOMASVILLE, Ga. — Thomas University secured a decisive 8-0 victory over Baptist University of Florida at Armory Field on Friday. Thomas collected eight hits and four stolen bases in the first game, while its pitching staff allowed just one hit over five innings, securing a shutout. In game two Thomas continued its strong performance with a 4-0 victory, capitalizing on two defensive errors by Baptist University of Florida and scoring all four of its runs in the fourth inning to secure back-to-back shutouts for the sweep.

Game 1: Thomas 8, Baptist University of Florida 0
In the first game, Thomas dominated Baptist University of Florida with effective scoring in the first inning. Ava Nunez walked, and Grace Hodges reached on an error, setting up Alexis Adams, who reached on a fielder's choice. Cameron Clontz was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Ashlyn Powell then singled to right center, driving in two runs. A throwing error allowed another run, and a wild pitch scored another, making it 4-0 at the end of the first inning. In the second inning, Hodges singled and stole second base. Adams followed with an RBI single to bring Hodges home, extending the lead to 5-0 after two innings. The fifth inning saw Powell hitting a solo home run to left field. Baileigh Herrera doubled, and Amber Hughes walked. A throwing error allowed Maggie Stubbs, who was pinch running, to score, and Nunez singled to bring in Hughes, pushing the lead to 8-0.

Herrera pitched a complete game for Thomas, allowing only one hit over five innings. She issued just one walk and struck out two batters, keeping Baptist University of Florida scoreless. Herrera's efficient outing required 79 pitches, 51 of which were strikes, and earned her the win. Hodges posted two hits, two runs, and two stolen bases, showcasing her speed on the bases. Powell contributed significantly with a home run, driving in three runs and scoring twice.

Game 2: Thomas 4, Baptist University of Florida 0
In the second game, the game remained scoreless through the first three innings, as both teams managed to keep each other off the scoreboard. In the fourth inning, Thomas broke the deadlock. Ashlyn Powell led off with a single to left center and proceeded to steal second base. Cameron Clontz then singled to right center, driving in Powell for the first run of the game. Rileigh Spinosa reached on a throwing error, allowing Clontz to advance to third, who then scored on a dropped fly ball. Maggie Colgan's run was unearned. Later, Ava Nunez singled through the right side, bringing Colgan home. Alexis Adams capped the inning with a single that scored Nunez. At the end of the fourth inning, Thomas led 4-0. The teams exchanged quiet innings for the remainder of the game, with neither side adding to the score.

In the second game, Maggie Stubbs pitched two innings for Thomas, allowing just one hit while striking out one batter. She demonstrated control, throwing 13 pitches with 10 of them being strikes. Ava Nunez tallied two hits, including a double, and scored one run while adding one RBI and a stolen base. Clontz pitched five innings, striking out five batters and allowing six hits, and also contributed with two hits and one RBI. Powell recorded one hit, an RBI, scored a run, and stole a base in her performance.

Up next for the Night Hawks is a doubleheader against Baptist University of Florida on Saturday, April 11, at 1 p.m. for Senior Day where the Night Hawks will honor 13 seniors.
