THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University Night Hawks pulled off a thrilling 3-2 upset over No. 22 Southeastern University in a seven-inning showdown Thursday afternoon at Armory Field, clinching the win with a walk-off in the bottom of the seventh.
Thomas (6-3) struck first, with pitcher Sierra Ussery helping her own cause by driving in the game's first run in the opening inning. Southeastern (4-1) responded in the third with an RBI single from Chapel Cunningham to even the score at 1-1.
The Fire took their only lead in the fifth when Hailey Bradley delivered an RBI single, but Thomas immediately answered as Alexis Adams laced an RBI double to tie it 2-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, Thomas capitalized on Southeastern's defensive struggles. After a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt moved the winning run into scoring position, a wild pitch and an infield grounder allowed the Night Hawks to plate the decisive run, sealing the upset victory.
Adams led the offensive charge for Thomas, going a perfect 4-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. In the circle, Ussery delivered a stellar complete-game performance, allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out three.
Southeastern, which entered the contest undefeated and ranked No. 22 in the nation, struggled to generate consistent offense. Lauren Sekinger and Bradley each scored a run, while Cunningham and Bradley provided the Fire's only RBIs.
Thomas will look to build on its momentum when it travels to No. 25 Coastal Georgia for a matchup on Friday.
