Night Hawks Leave Gulf Shores with Two Wins

Gulf Shores, AL | The Thomas University Softball Team wrapped up play in the Gulf Shores Invitational Tournament with two wins over Bethel University and William Woods University on Sunday afternoon. 

 

Game One vs. Bethel University

In the top of the first inning, the Wildcats would strike first in the form of a solo homerun that would give them an early 1-0 lead.

 

The Night Hawks would respond in an explosive manner in the bottom of the fifth inning. In the inning, the Night Hawks would plate two runs on two hits. Averie Sheppard would kickstart the inning with a single. With Sheppard in scoring position, Grace Hodges would single. Ansley Eason would then reach via an error, allowing Sheppard to cross the plate. Hodges would then score courtesy of a ground out to the right side of the infield. After the inning, the Night Hawks would hold the advantage, 2-1.

 

From there, Alissa Mankiewich was effective in relief, and prevented the Wildcats from mounting a comeback. In three innings pitched, Mankiewich allowed zero hits, zero earned runs, and zero walks. 

 

The Night Hawks would take the victory, 2-1.

 

In the contest, the Night Hawks compiled seven hits compared to the Wildcats' one. Five different Night Hawks would record a hit.

 

Game Two vs. William Woods University 

The Night Hawks would carry the momentum gained during game one with them to their second game of the day. In the top of the first inning, Sheppard would single. With Sheppard in scoring position, Ansley Eason then tripled to right field, allowing Sheppard to score, and giving the Night Hawks a one run advantage early in the contest.

 

The Owls would provide a response in the bottom on the second inning. In the inning, they would plate two runs on three hits.

 

The Night Hawks would come storming back in the top of the fifth inning. Allyson Mirick would set the tone with a leadoff single. Hailie Stewart, who pinch ran for Mirick, would then cross the plate via a Sheppard RBI single that would even the score at two a piece. 

 

In the following inning, the Night Hawks would regain possession of the lead. A Kennedy Hardy RBI single would plate Faith Graben, who pinch ran for Adreanna KillingsworthHowever, the Night Hawks weren't done just yet. In the top of the seventh inning, Kristen Stellar would single and later cross the plate via an Ansley Eason RBI single. 

 

The Night Hawks would take the victory, 4-2.

 

Sierra Ussery was credited with the win for the Night Hawks. In five innings pitched, Ussery allowed just three hits and two earned runs. Emylee Mountin was effective in relief. In two innings pitched, Mountin allowed one hit, zero earned runs, and zero walks. 

 

In the contest, the Night Hawks outhit the Owls 12-4. Eight different Night Hawks recorded a hit, and three of those Night Hawks produced a multi-hit performance.

 

Next Up

The Night Hawks will be back in action on March, 8th to take on Middle Georgia State University in their first SSAC Conference series of the 2024 season. Game one will be played at 1:00 PM, and game two will follow at 3:00 PM in Cochran, GA.
