WEST POINT, Ga.- Thomas toughed out a SSAC win against a game Point Skyhawks team on Wednesday night.
The Night Hawks found themselves down early as Tommy Eskew found an opening and got it past
Jorge Gonzalez to put the game at 1-0 in the 11th minute. Thomas soon went on the attack, but faced a stifling Point defense which only allowed 3 shots on goal for the entire first half of play, while being aggressive on the attack to extend the deficit.
In the second half, the intensity and focus came back and The Night Hawks found themselves making important defensive plays and keeping the ball on the Skyhawks' side of the pitch. In the 53rd minute, a foul by Point outside the box, set up a free kick for
Santiago Viel, who delivered with a strike off the left foot to equalize for Thomas. Two red cards put Point down a man and left them without goalkeeper Callum Thompson who was excellent between the sticks during the game. The Night Hawks took the numbers advantage and capitalized with
Jake Wright sneaking one right by the new goalkeeper to net the go-ahead goal in the 59th minute.
As time wined down, the Skyhawks upped the aggression again, however Thomas stood firm defensively and remained steady on the attack. Another red card on Point opened up another opportunity and after a couple of deflections,
Diego Saenz chipped one in to put the game away for the Night Hawks.
Thomas will play on the road against conference foe Faulkner University in a rematch of last year's SSAC Quarterfinal on Saturday, October 12 at 5:00 PM.
