THOMASVILLE, GA – The Thomas University Women's Soccer team opened up SSAC play at home against the number one ranked team in the NAIA, falling to William Carey on Thursday afternoon 2-10.
William Carey (7-0-0, 1-0-0) got off to a hot start offensively as a goal from Christina Salmon put the Crusaders on the board. Less than a minute later Salmon found Julia Herbst to put WCU back on the board with a 2-0 lead.
Freshman Pearl Mortimer had an answer of her own almost 30 seconds later as TU trailed 1-2. Despite the goal from the Green and White, WCU did not slow down as Karen Vilau continued to push William Carey's lead to 3-0 at this point, before finding the back of the net once again in the 22' minute.
In the final minutes of the first half, Sophomore Madelyn Musgrove found herself on the stat sheet with a goal of her own with an assist from Junior Elsebeth Andersen.
Coming out of the locker, it did not take the Crusaders long to find their rhythm as Julia Herbest netted another goal with only three minutes into the second half. Thomas could not find a solid answer for William Carey as another goal was scored by WCU in the 61' minute with back to back goals.
Eventually, the Crusaders found a surge of three goals to cap off the SSAC matchup against the Night Hawks.
William Carey took a total of thirty-five shots with seventeen of those on goal as Thomas shot eight with three on goal. The Crusades ended the game with just one save as Thomas led with seven. William Carey had several opportunities at corner kicks with six and thomas with three.
The Night Hawks will be back on the pitch this upcoming Saturday for the SSAC matchup Game of the Week against the University of Mobile.
