TU Falls to Hastings in Pitching Duel

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Thomas University baseball team lost, 1-0, Saturday to Hastings College (Neb.) in the RussMatt Invitational.

The Night Hawks went 1-2 overall in the three-game event after splitting two games with Kansas Christian Friday, falling 9-2, then winning 5-0.

Against Hastings, Thomas battled through eight-and-a-half scoreless innings before the Broncos hit a two-out walk-off single to left to take the win.

In the pitchers duel, AJ Wydra struck out five in his 6.2 innings of work, scattering four hits and walking a pair of Broncos. Jacob Pino came in for 2.0 innings of relief, striking out a pair of batters and allowing four hits and one unearned run.

In the bottom of the sixth, Hastings threatened to score after a leadoff single, sac bunt and drawn walk, but Wydra forced a line out, then struck out the final batter to end the inning.

Throughout the game, the Night Hawks had multiple chances to get on the board, but the Hastings pitching staff held TU scoreless. Thomas left the bases loaded in the third and seventh innings and left a pair of runners stranded in the first, fifth and eighth innings.

Cam Williams connected on a pair of hits for TU, including one double. Chandler Skelly and Michael Sowers also tagged doubles for the Night Hawks.

Thomas is back in action next weekend in Miami Gardens, Fla., facing St. Thomas University in a three-game Sun Conference series.
