Second Half Score Not Enough as Night Hawks Fall 2-1

THOMASVILLE, Ga. — The Thomas University men's soccer team fought in a rainy Monday afternoon contest, losing to Florida National 2-1 at the TU Soccer Complex.

With persistent rain throughout the majority of Monday's contest, the Night Hawks fell behind 1-0 after a first half goal by Florida National in the 22nd minute. Thomas University then had a huge opportunity in the 26th, when FNU goalkeeper Victor Ruiz saved Cavan Daley's shot.

After the half, the Night Hawks would even up the score in the 68th minute, with a line drive strike from Kieran McCombe. The play developed through sideline play of Luiz Anchieta finding Cavan Daley whose blocked shot landed at the feet of McCombe, the sophomore did the rest, netting his first goal of the season.

The 1-1 score would hold not be maintained as the Conquistadors scored the eventual game-winner in the 79th minute.

The go-ahead and game-winning goal in the 79th came off a back post delivery that found the head of Blas Barrancos, 2-1.

After the goal both sides continued to earn good looks at the net, including promising chances for Thomas that were all turned away by either a block or a save by the FNU back line.

The Night Hawks had one more final chance in the 89th minute as a contested free kick from Giacomo Bacigalupo got poorly cleared, but TU's ensuing possession was sent away with a save.

In net, Jorge Gonzalez replaced Stephen Douglas for the final 30, registering one save.

Both teams struggled to find shots on target in the rainy conditions, with Florida National only sending four on target while Thomas sent three.

Thomas nows sits at 3-2-1, with a home game this upcoming Friday wrapping up non-conference play for the foreseeable future.

The home contest against the currently seeded #2 University of Mobile is set for 4 PM.
