THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University baseball team was unable to grab a game from its series against #17 St. Thomas, falling to the Bobcats 11-1 in seven innings Saturday afternoon at Varnedoe Stadium.
The Night Hawks (7-8, 0-6 SUN) once again found six hits in the contest despite the perennial play of STU (11-3, 4-1 SUN) in the outfield. Freshman Right-Hander
Dustin Letchworth (1-1) was given the starting nod, allowing four runs in five hits in one and one-third innings pitched.
St. Thomas got hot from the plate in the second, loading the bases in the first four at-bats before Ezequiel Valdez blasted a 2RBI double to left field to give the Bobcats the first runs of the day. Following the scores, Letchworth was pulled for Redshirt Junior
Andy Allison, who was able to get TU out of the jam but not before seeing another pair of runs scored for the Navy & Burgundy to extend its lead 4-0.
After adding another run in the third inning, STU saw its best hitting performance of the contest in the fourth inning, recording six runs with five hits, highlighted by Bobcats' Jack Khawly rounding all the bases on a TU error and a three-run homer from Chris Schoeller.
Inning Six provided a silver lining for the Green & White, as Redshirt Freshman
Cameron Rosario's leadoff double ultimately set up Freshman
Matthew Delay Jr. to bring home the Florida A&M transfer for TU's only run of the contest.
Thomas was unable to keep the game alive in the seventh inning, as a 1-2-3 solidified a St. Thomas sweep over the Night Hawks.
TU will take a break from SUN play as the team is back on the diamond Tuesday in a road, non-conference contest against Edward Waters College. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
