Night Hawks Ready for Home Opener

THOMASVILLE, Ga. — The Thomas University softball team will open its 2022 home schedule on Wednesday, when the Knights from Middle Georgia pay Armory Field a visit for a non-conference doubleheader.

The Night Hawks (2-3, 0-0 SUN) opened their season splitting a pair of contests between RV Reinhardt University and #11 Georgia Gwinnett College. First, TU opened their play at the Grizzly Open downing the Grizzlies 3-1 with starting pitcher Larran Carter lasting all seven innings, allowing one hit. Thomas then dropped the next three consecutive games, losing to Reinhardt, losing to Georgia Gwinnett in a day two rematch, and falling to #22 University of the Cumberlands in Saturday's final match of the day.

Sunday provided the Night Hawks a second chance at Reinhardt, and, after the Eagles previously beat TU 9-1 (5) a day prior, the Ladies were able to respond as a Taylor Lanphere walk-off single saw TU end the weekend on a good note with a come from behind 7-6 win.

In the other dugout, the Knights (7-1, 0-0 SSAC) will be another tough opponent for Thomas as the team out of Cochran, Georgia has now won seven of eight to start the season, and enter the Rose City on a five game winning streak.

The Knights come into the doubleheader leading the NAIA in runs and hits so far this season, with a .399 batting average as a team. MGA has already stolen 24 bases in their eight game season, which ranks them 4th in the nation in steals per contest. Sophomore Karlee Back leads the team with 16 hits, while junior Emma Raulerson and sophomore Alexis Cosgrove have brought in a combined 24 RBIs on 23 hits. Pitching for the Knights, freshman Mackenzie Silvia is a perfect 4-0 on the year.

The historical matchup is deadlocked at two apiece entering Wednesday's weekday matchup, with each team splitting doubleheaders the past two seasons.

First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m., with game two scheduled to follow the conclusion of game one.
