LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — The Thomas University softball team opened its 2022 campaign Friday morning with a pair of non conference contests in the Grizzly Open hosted by Georgia Gwinnett College.
The Night Hawks (1-1, 0-0 SUN) opened the tournament with a match against the host Grizzlies, stunning the #11 ranked team in nation winning 3-1.
Senior starting pitcher Larran Carter provided an excellent performance for TU, allowing only one hit and one run in the contest. Additionally, the Senior from Thomasville, Ga. faced 23 batter getting four strike outs, forcing 13 fly-outs and 2 ground-outs.
The Night Hawk bats were cold in the first contest, but that didn't stop TU as the game neared the closing innings, with superb base running in the 6th bringing home two runs off of wild pitches by GGC pitcher Alexa Good.
Defensively, the Night Hawks were nearly perfect giving away a lone run and only committing one error.
In game two of the tournament-opening day, the Night Hawks once again had early season struggle registering hits, as Reinhardt (2-2, 0-0 AAC) took advantage of two big offensive innings claiming a 9-1 victory after five innings.
TU's lone run of the ball game from an Adreanna Killingsworth double in the first that brought Senior Hunter Williams home from second.
Killingsworth also played on the mound for the first four innings, allowing four runs before Junior Michelle Norvell replaced the starter inside the circle.
All five teams are 1-1 (Thomas, Reinhardt, Lindsey Wilson, GGC, and the University of the Cumberlands) entering day two of the tournament, with Thomas set to face GGC at 10 a.m. in a rematch from opening day. Following that contest, the Night Hawks will face another NAIA nationally ranked opponent, when the Patriots from #22 University of Cumberlands and Night Hawks take the field at the Grizzly Softball Complex.
