THOMASVILLE, GA- The Thomas University Men's basketball team clinched their first home win of the season against Texas A&M Texarkana on Sunday afternoon. All five starters posted double digits numbers to push past the Eagles. Head Coach Colin Cotter also notched his first career home win.
Both teams started to struggle early in the first half before a jumper from Senior Mohammed Abubakar put TU (2-2, 0-0) on the board. The Eagles (2-1) did not take long to answer back. Additionally, Texas A&M Tekarna started to play a physical game which caused Thomas to go to the charity stripe. Mohammed continued his scoring to put the Green and White up by three. TU had a surge of shots to boost their lead by fourteen points as the Eagles' had no strong answer for Thomas. Texas A&M Texarkana continued to fight back, but struggled on defense as TU took advantage of the misreads from the Eagles'. Eventually, the blue and burgundy crawled their way back to a deficit of just nine points, with a three pointer from Tray Spencer. TU did not seem shocked as Senior Toriano Lewis took charge. He created scoring opportunities as the Richmond, Va native finished the first half with fourteen points.
Entering the second half, TU continued to expand their lead before the game went back to being physical. The Eagles' cut TU's lead by just three as several fouls were being called on both ends of the court. Additionally, a conversational call that resulted in a tech for the Eagle's sent Toriano Lewis to the Charity Stripe. Senior Shakari Williams drilled a three from downtown to change the momentum of the game. Eventually, a foul from Francis Doe sent Toriano Lewis and Mohammed Abubkar to the line, knocking both free throw downs to help the Night Hawks slowly pull away with a slim win.
Overall, TU made nearly every shot inside of the paint as the team finished 51.6% from the field. The bench also did their due diligence contributing fourteen points. The Green and White did not shy away from the contact, scoring a total of thirty-two points from inside the perimeter. Additionally, Thomas shot 76.5% from the free throw line. TU also finished with a total of twenty one second chance points. The Eagle's struggled as a team, shooting 39.7% from the field and 25.0% from outside the paint. As the game turned into physical play, Texas A&M Texkarna shot 76.9% from the charity stripe.
Next up, Thomas will hit the road for their SUN Conference opener against Keiser University on Thursday evening. Tip Off is set for 7:30pm in West Palm Beach, Fla.
