 COLUMBIA, SC- The Thomas University Women's Basketball team opened their season on the road against Columbia International University on the road, but could not come away with the win despite the late surge. 


The Rams (1-0) trailed the Night Hawks at the end of the first quarter 14-13, but the Rams opened the second period on a 20-0 run to up 33-14. Hannah Wilkerson played a major role in the surge as she was able to score ten points during the second quarter. The Rams held a double digit lead throughout the second half, their largest lead came at 45-25 with 6:07 left in the third quarter. The Night Hawks (0-1) eventually made a small surge, but could not come away with the win as CIU pulled away late in the second half.


Overall, CIU led most of the statistical categories for the game as transfer Tearrake Cook led the Rams' on defense with 17 rebounds. Returner, Madison Hatcher, was very efficient for CIU as she shot 50% from the field. Hatcher was also able to knock down three triples as she accumulated 14 points on the day, which also gave the Rams' the field goal and three point percentage advantage. 

 

The Night Hawks was able to create several second chance points, including help from the bench. The Green and White was able to boast 18 points off of turnovers and 11 from the bench. Overall as a team, TU shot just 28% from the field and 35% from the arch. Thomas did have an advantage at the charity stripe, shooting 80% from the free throw line. One of the highlights of the box score came from Transfer Lenise Santiago as the Tampa, Fla native led the Night Hawks with 14 points. 


WHAT'S NEXT: Thomas will have a few days to rest before heading to Cochran, Ga for a non-conference matchup against Middle Georgia State University. Tipoff is set for 5:30pm.
