Night Hawks Look to Start New Year with Crucial Conference Wins

THOMASVILLE, GA — The Thomas University woman's basketball team is gearing up to face-off against two SUN Conference opponents this week, as the Night Hawks first travel to compete against Warner University on Thursday before hosting the Warriors from Webber International University on Saturday in the TU Gymnasium.

The Night Hawks (1-10, 1-4 SUN) played their two Holiday contests short-handed as the team battled adversity in both the December 16th and December 30th contests without a fully intact roster.

The Night Hawks will hope Thursday can present a golden opportunity to get back on track in conference play, as the Warner Royals sit at 5-7 overall and 1-4 in SUN Conference competition. The Royals enter the contest rejuvenated since the Christmas hiatus, as the Royals have won both of their contests since resuming play from the holiday break.

Most recently, the Royals outlasted D3 opponent Bob Jones University 75-62 Tuesday, January 4th. Additionally, the Royals have proven to be a much better team in Lake Wales than they are on the road, winning four of their last six in the Turner Athletic Center.

Warner is led by the incredibly efficient Chanelle McDonald who averages 14.5 points per game shooting 67% from the field. The impressive field goal percentage is good enough for number two in the nation which is impressively compounded by the fact that the 6'2" forward is merely a Freshman.

Looking further into the weekend, Saturday's contest against Webber International will be another highly contested SUN Conference matchup, with the Warriors visiting the Rose City sitting at 10-4 overall and 2-2 in Conference play.

The Warriors were projected to end third overall in this seasons preseason poll, but have since dropped a pair of conference contests against Keiser and Southeastern. Currently the team is sitting in 5th in the SUN Conference standings.

Despite the bumpy conference play  start, Webber's lineup features four players averaging over 10 PPG with Graduate Student Deja King averaging a team-best 14.5 points shooting 41% from deep. The team also uniquely utilizes a rotational system that brings the team's second best scorer Electra Graham from the bench. The strategy has proven to keep opponents guessing as to which player will be the team's impact player on any given night and has particularly worked well against opponents on the road.

Thursday's tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. while Saturday's afternoon matchup is slated for 2:00 p.m.
