CLERMONT, Fla. – With two outs in the top of the seventh and the tying and go-ahead runs on third and first, Senior
Rebecca Boesen (9-10) delivered her biggest strikeout of the season for the Thomas University softball team to knock off Keiser 2-1 Friday afternoon at PFX Athletics Legends Way Ballpark.
TU recorded only four hits on the day. Boesen pitched a complete game, allowing one run in five hits with five strikeouts.
In a game that was primarily defensive, both teams took gambles in crucial moments. With one out in the top of the first, the Lady Night Hawks (23-18) made a put out in foul territory deep to right, but Keiser's Mikayla Frost's attempt to tag up at home fell short, as Sophomore
Alexus Johnson just got the throw in time to Freshman catcher
Jaelynn Vialpando to prevent the run from scoring.
The Seahawks would eventually score the first run of the game in the fourth inning, as an Ashley Brooker walk, paired with a wild pitch that advanced her to second, set up Janelle Dominguez with a RBI single to left field for a 1-0 lead.
Thomas would catch a break in the sixth inning, as a routine 1-3 play off a hit from Freshman
Hailie Stewart went wild, allowing the Orangevale, Californian to advance to second. Freshman
Averie Sheppard would tie the game 1-1 on the next at-bat with an RBI triple before KU starting pitcher Giovanna Watts was pulled for Madison Lindsey.
After Junior
Hunter Williams was walked, Senior
Holly Campbell delivered a shot to left field that brought home the go-ahead RBI for the Hunter Green & White's first lead (2-1) of the day. The Lady Night Hawks gambled on Sophomore
Addyson Mauldin's at-bat, attempting to steal bases off a strikeout pitch but Williams was caught at third to end the inning.
Keiser would make one final attempt to tie the game and keep the contest alive in the seventh. The Seahawks began with a Janelle Dominguez leadoff, followed by a Thomas miscue on a 4-3 play from a bunt that put runners on first and third. The following at-bat resulted in a fielder's choice, as Junior
Corryne Diaz got the throw to Vialpando in time to prevent the game-tying run from scoring. With a pop fly and a strikeout, Thomas was able to keep its season alive with a 2-1 nail-biter.
The Lady Night Hawks will now face fourth-seeded USC-Beaufort in another elimination contest later in the day with a 4:30 p.m. first pitch.
