LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – To the A.I.I., it was an upset no one anticipated. For the Thomas University Women's soccer team, it was business as usual Friday night, as the Night Hawks subdued the RV V-Hawks 2-0 at the Grizzly Soccer Complex.
TU (7-5-1) got to work early, setting up two corner kicks from Sophomore
Hadas Prawer. The second attempt by Prawer led to the match's first goal in the seventh minute by Sophomore
Jana Pastorek, as the Moormerland, Germany native scored her fifth goal of the season.
Viterbo (9-2) had a true chance to equalize in the 24th minute with a Sydney King corner, but the opportunity was botched via missed shot by Lara Boyum.
The missed opportunity would come back to haunt the V-Hawks minutes later, as VU Goalkeeper Abby Breitbach was unable to grab a firm hold of the ball for an attempted save, leaving Sophomore
Ayla Aiduck the golden opportunity to steal away the ball and score on an open net to give the Hunter Green & White a 2-0 lead.
The V-Hawks would add two more shots before the end of the first half, but Freshman Keeper
Emily Lamoreaux picked up two more saves.
In the 69th minute, Viterbo saw another corner opportunity that could have led to its first score, but once again the end result was a missed shot, this time going wide.
VU had two more opportunities within the final ten minutes of regulation to salvage a scoring chance, but an unsuccessful corner and a save by Lamoreaux sealed the Lake City, Fla. product's fourth shutout of the season and a spot in the A.I.I. Final Saturday night against three-time champion RV Georgia Gwinnett.
Regardless of the result of the Final, Friday night's win over Viterbo secured a spot in next week's NAIA Opening Round for the Night Hawks.
