SB Looks to Even Series Against RV Warriors

Angelo Pontello | Sports Information Director | @apontello44

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University softball team began its conference slate with RV Webber International and will now conclude the regular season at home against the Warriors in a The Sun Conference doubleheader Saturday for Senior Day.

The Lady Night Hawks (20-16, 11-11 TSC) remain in the driver's seat for the last spot in the 2021 The Sun Conference tournament next week thanks to a doubleheader sweep of Ave Maria and a St. Thomas split.  TU has two ways of punching its ticket to Clermont, Fla.: 1) Thomas must win one of Saturday's contests OR 2) Southeastern loses one of its two games against USCB.

The Hunter Green & White saw a successful weekend last time out, winning three of its four games.  TU hit .276 as a team, led by Sophomore Addyson Mauldin who personally batted .538 in that span.   From the pitching circle, the Lady Night Hawks elected to go with two pitchers for most of the weekend, as Senior Rebecca Boesen (7-9) averaged seven and a half hits allowed with four earned runs, while Junior Larran Carter (7-3) averaged seven hits with two and a half earned runs.

WIU (27-21, 14-8 TSC) may be looking at a tune-up before Clermont, but with the Warriors tied with Warner for the conference regular season crown, Webber will have something to play for Saturday.  While the Midnight Green & White look to get back on track before postseason play, it has been a recent struggle for a team that has dropped three of its last four games.  One bright spot for Webber this week has been the play of Kaitlin Cockcroft, going 3-for-7 at the plate against Ave Maria and recording four RBIs.

Thomas' batting unit will challenge Webber's two primary pitchers.  Kayla Swinson (12-5) holds a 1.90 ERA with a .223 season opponent batting average.  Emma Maitland (11-8), on the other hand, may hold a 1.98 ERA, but also is fresh off a complete game in which the Senior allowed just one earned run and six hits.

TU will have the opportunity to even the regular season series against the Warriors, as WIU swept the Lady Night Hawks earlier this season in Babson Park, Fla.
