TU Drops Doubleheader to #14 Keiser

Angelo Pontello | Sports Information Director | @apontello44

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University baseball team was poised to give #14 Keiser a challenge, but mistakes held the Night Hawks back as the Seahawks flew past TU in both contests (4-0 and 15-1 in eight innings) Friday afternoon and evening at Varnedoe Stadium.

Game One Recap (#14 KU 4, TU 0)
Thomas (18-29, 7-16 TSC) kept Keiser at bay for most of the game, but the Night Hawks were unable to make up for an early 3-0 deficit.  Despite no runs scored, TU managed to tally six hits.

Redshirt Junior Thomas Sorrentino (2-2) started the contest for the Hunter Green & White, but the Spring Hill, Fla. product's time on the mound lasted two batters, as Sorrentino was pulled for Freshman right-hander Bobby Jacobs.  Thomas would not escape the inning before a Seahawk unearned run was scored (1-0).

After KU added two more runs in the top of the second to extend its lead 3-0, Freshman Luis Torres fired up the Night Hawks' dugout with a leadoff bunt that proved to beat out the throw to first.  Freshman Turner Maddox followed suit with a base hit, setting up a potential scoring drive for Thomas.  A fielder's choice from Redshirt Junior Rodwell Munoz positioned Torres for the Hunter Green & White's first score of the day, but a grounder double play on the next at-bat foiled TU's run chances in the inning.

With two outs in the bottom of the third, Redshirt Bradley Fleenor sent a double to left field in an effort to start another Night Hawks' scoring chance.  With a hit from Freshman Andy Valdes delivered deep to left field, Fleenor took a gamble, rounding third to add a run for TU but was beat out by the throw to home to end the inning, keeping Keiser's 3-0 lead.

The Seahawks were limited to two total hits between the fourth and fifth innings but saw a breakthrough in the sixth with a leadoff homer that pushed KU's lead to four.

TU looked for another opportunity to close the gap but would only manage one more hit in the final four innings as Keiser preserved a shutout win over the Night Hawks.

Game Two Recap (#14 KU 15, TU 1 – 8 inn.)
Thomas once again saw a moderate amount of hits against a nationally-ranked opponent but was limited to a small amount of scoring chances.  Five different pitchers represented the Night Hawks on the mound, with starting pitcher Redshirt Senior Patrick Haley (2-7) allowing four earned runs with six hits and two strikeouts in four innings.

Down 7-0 in the fourth inning, the Night Hawks saw its best scoring chance orchestrated, beginning with two leadoff hits that resulted in runners on first and third.  Maddox picked up the team's only RBI of the day that brought home Fleenor for the score.
