THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University baseball team completed its series sweep over Florida National Sunday afternoon with a 16-6 win in seven innings at Varnedoe Stadium.
Redshirt Senior
Logan Hollyman (1-0) picked up the win after entering the contest in the third inning, limiting FNU to just two hits and no runs allowed with three strikeouts.
The Night Hawks (9-15, 0-6 TSC) set the tone in the bottom of the first inning, as a leadoff hit by Freshman
Jayson Zmejkoski led to an RBI double for Redshirt Junior
Brad Toxen led to a 1-0 lead for the Night Hawks, the first time the Hunter Green & White struck first in the series.
Four at-bats later, Redshirt Sophomore
Chandler Skelly came up big with a 2RBI single to extend TU's lead 3-0.
The Conquistadors (4-12) found their way back into the game in the third. With runners on second and third, a home run blast by Manuel Blanco tied the game 3-3.
FNU struggled in the fourth inning to keep TU off the bags. The Hunter Green & White would soon retake the lead (4-3) off a sacrifice fly from Zmejkoski that brought home Redshirt Sophomore
Bradley Fleenor. Redshirt Sophomore
Raines Plant delivered a 2RBI double on the next at-bat to bring Thomas' lead back to three runs.
A new pitcher took the mound for Florida National in the fifth inning, but just like the previous contest, the change did not affect the Night Hawks' hitting spree, as TU tacked on six more runs in the inning, highlighted by a 2RBI triple from Redshirt Sophomore
Chandler Skelly.
The Hunter Green & White loaded the bases quickly in the sixth inning, and scored three runs for their troubles to give the team its largest lead of the day (15-3).
FNU managed to salvage some runs in the top of the seventh, as the Conquistadors capitalized off a 3RBI double by Francisco Perez de Leon that cut the deficit to nine runs (15-6). The team's efforts were soon for not, as Thomas followed with two leadoff hits and a walk to load the bases, ultimately leading to a game-ending RBI from Freshman
Luis Torres to give the Night Hawks a 16-6 win in seven innings and its first, three-game sweep since 2018.
