Six-Run Third Inning Doom Night Hawks

Angelo Pontello | Sports Information Director | @apontello44

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University baseball team could not overcome a six-run spree by RV Webber International, as the Night Hawks were defeated by the Warriors 10-2 Friday night at Varnedoe Stadium.

Despite just two runs scored, TU (3-9, 0-4 TSC) recorded ten hits as a team.

Redshirt Senior Pitcher Patrick Haley (0-3) allowed 11 hits and seven earned runs and threw three strikeouts in four innings on the mound.  Redshirt Junior Caleb Rogers also pitched four innings, giving up three runs in four hits while recording two strikeouts.

The Hunter Green & White struck first in the second inning, as a few hits and a Webber infield error brought home Redshirt Junior Brad Toxen for a 1-0 lead.

The Warriors would respond ferociously in the top of the third, as WIU began the inning with three leadoff hits to load the bases.  A walk from Rougie Odor on the next at-bat brought home the tying run (1-1).  Webber would take advantage of the loaded bases, as the team capitalized on back-to-back 2RBI hits from Angel Diaz and Dominique Collie Jr. to take a quick 5-1 lead.  WIU would finish the top half of the inning with a sacrifice RBI from Steven Lugo to drive home Collie Jr. for the five-run lead.

While the Warriors added on two more runs, Toxen would start the bottom of the sixth with a literal bang, sending the ball over left center for a leadoff homer to cut the deficit 7-2.

Thomas began the top of the eighth picking up two outs in the first three at-bats, but the Warriors would take advantage of a Rogers' balk and wild pitch to send a runner into scoring position.  Two singles to left field and an error later, Webber extended its lead to eight runs (10-2).

In the bottom of the ninth, the Night Hawks used pinch hitters and runners to find a way to get men on base, but a grounder hit from Redshirt Sophomore Anthony Dorak led to a game-ending double play, securing the series' first game for the Warriors.
