LAKELAND, Fla. – The Thomas University baseball team began Friday's doubleheader with a quick 2-0 start, but it was #1 Southeastern that would ultimately come away with the game and the series, defeating Thomas 13-2 in Game One and 12-2 in Game Two at Broer Stadium.
Game One Recap
TU (0-6, 0-3 TSC) recorded four hits with two runs and three errors. All four hits occurred in the first four innings, as the Night Hawks had one hit in each of those innings. Redshirt Sophomore Pitcher
Paul Haskew (0-2) pitched the first two innings and allowed three hits with seven runs before Redshirt Sophomore Pitcher
Andy Allison took over in the third inning.
Allison allowed six hits with three runs while recording five strikeouts in three innings pitched.
Top of 1st Inning (TU 2, #1 SEU 0)
- Freshman Luis Torres captured his first collegiate RBI via fielder's choice, bringing home fellow Freshman Jayson Zmejkoski for a 1-0 lead; a throwing error by the Fire made Redshirt Freshman Jacob Paterson safe at second, loading the bases for Thomas
- On the next at-bat, Redshirt Junior Brad Toxen was hit by a pitch, allowing one run to score (2-0)
Game Two Recap
The Night Hawks' pitching staff had a rough start in the first inning, allowing seven runs off six hits, but managed to keep SEU's bats at bay the rest of the game. After Redshirt Senior Pitcher
Patrick Haley (0-2) was relieved in the third inning, Redshirt Sophomore
Owen Simonds saw an inning and two-thirds of pitching, allowing one run and one hit. Redshirt Senior
Logan Hollyman followed, only facing five batters but allowed no hits and no runs. Resdhirt Senior
Jorge Meran finished the night for the Hunter Green & White in the fifth and sixth innings, also allowing one hit with one run.
Top of 2nd Inning (#1 SEU 7, TU 1)
- Back-to-back walks from SEU Pitcher Zack Rice brough Fleenor home for TU's first score in the game
Bot. of 2nd Inning (#1 SEU 7, TU 1)
- TU made the doubleheader's lone double play, as a hit from the Fire's Nick Bottari allowed Zmejkoski to field and throw the ball to Toxen, who made the throw to Redshirt Junior Victor Terrero in time
Top of 7th (#1 SEU 11, TU 2)
- Freshman Colby Tabb began the inning with a leadoff single
- After two quick outs following Tabb's hit, Redshirt Sophomore Raines Plant singled to shortstop, but a Southeastern infield error allowed Tabb to round third and score Thomas' second run of the contest
