THOMASVILLE, GA — For the second time this season, the Thomas University women's basketball team fell to the Bears from Truett McConnell University. This time, the Bears won the contest 71-54.
The Bears jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before TU's Amayla Sharif responded and scored the first bucket of the contest for Thomas. After that, the Night Hawks were unable to find a solid offensive rhythm only scoring seven points in the period, and trailing 15-7 after the first quarter wrapped up.
After the first, and throughout the next two quarters, the Night Hawks and Bears were neck-and-neck, until the fourth, where the Bears extended the lead once more to win the game 71-54.
Thomas' strongest quarter was the third, as Nayeli Williams came off the bench to score nine points on a perfect 3-3 from downtown. Additionally, Jaleigh Miller and Mikyla Woods came off the bench scoring efficiently. Combined, the three role-players accounted for 26 of Thomas' 54 points, shooting a blistering 60% from the field.
Together the Night Hawks had their best three-point shooting of recent, knocking down just under 40% (38.5) from behind the arc. Surprisingly, the team's overall field goal percentage was at the season average of 37%, even with the team's improvement from deep.
In the end, the Bears overwhelmed TU on the glass claiming 18 second-chance points off of the teams 16 offensive boards. Also, the Night Hawks turned the ball over too frequently to keep up, as TU's 19 turnovers led to 26 of the Bears' 71 points.
Up next, the Night Hawks will have a two week break from play before playing DII opponent Georgia SouthWestern University on December 30th. Tipoff in Americus, Georgia is scheduled for 3 p.m.
