Missed Shots and Turnovers Plague TU in Season Opener

BABSON PARK, Fla. – The Thomas University Women's basketball team could not overcome a slow first half and a turnover-plagued game, as the Lady Night Hawks fell to the Warriors of Webber International 78-49 Thursday night.

TU (0-1, 0-1 TSC) kept TSC's hottest offense to 12 points in the first period.  Of the 13 points scored by the Lady Night Hawks, seven came from the charity stripe, while Senior Guard Alexis Powell went 3-for-7 from the field.

The second period did not provide the Hunter Green & White any favors, as TU only scoring one point off a Destiny Reed free throw with 3:31 in the period.  Webber (5-0, 2-0 TSC) took advantage of the Lady Night Hawks' struggle by putting up 20 in the period, including a 41.2% Field Goal Percentage and converting 50% of shots beyond the perimeter.  WIU would hold on to their lead for the rest of the game, heading into intermission with a 32-14 lead.

For Thomas, the offense began to find its stride in the third period, as the Lady Night Hawks shot 50% from the field and converted on its lone attempt from outside the arch.

Period 4 produced the most points in a quarter for both teams, as Thomas scored 18 compared to Webber's 27.  The Lady Night Hawks continued to build off their second-half conversion momentum, capitalizing on 60% of the team's shots.  The effort, however, was overshadowed by the Warriors' scoring offense, who also converted 60% from the field but with twice as many shots.

Sophomore Guard Emiah Downie led all TU scorers with 12 on the night, shooting 3-for-7 from the field and 2-for-5 long-range.  Alexis Powell finished the night shooting 50% overall, tallying 11 points and four boards.

The Lady Night Hawks return home Saturday to await another strong opponent in Coastal Georgia.  Tipoff at TU Gymnasium is scheduled for 2 p.m.
