THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University Women's basketball team will begin the season Thursday as the Lady Night Hawks get right into The Sun Conference action with the conference's toughest pair of games for the weekend, beginning with a road trip to the hottest team in TSC in Webber International University.
After a 12-day delay from the initial schedule, all the Lady Night Hawks can say is that it's about time. "We are extremely anxious to get our first game under our belt." said Lady Night Hawks Head Coach
Myron Brown. "With four games already postponed due to COVID, we just want to play." TU saw the trip to Faulkner cancelled, in which the team was scheduled to play two games in Montgomery, Ala. The initial home opener against #7 Southeastern November 14th has been rescheduled to December 15th while another home game against Faulkner, initially scheduled for Tuesday, was canceled.
TU returns Senior Guard
Alisha Clayton, who ranked fourth in TSC last season in Rebounds per Game (9.05) and 11th in TSC in Steals per Game (2.05). The Hunter Green & White also return the team's second-leading scorer from last season in Senior Guard
Alexis Powell.
Webber (4-0, 1-0 TSC) has been red-hot to start the 2020-21 season, recently defeating Florida College Monday night in Temple Terrace, Fla. "Webber has been playing really good basketball from last season, carrying over into this season," said Coach Brown. "We will have to match their intensity and grit for 40 minutes."
The Warriors' scoring threat will prove to be challenging enough for Thomas, as WIU leads the conference in Scoring Offense (75.8 Points per Game), Field Goal Percentage (.416), 3-Pt Field Goal Percentage (.349), and Assists per Game (18.75). The team is led by Paris Copeland, who averages 19.25 Points a Game. Another prominent player for Webber is Guard Leandra Franklin, who leads TSC in both Assosts per Game (6.50) and Steals per Game (4.25).
The TU-WIU showdown has been selected by The Sun Conference as Women's Basketball's Game of the Week. Tipoff at the Sabbagh Athletic Center is slated for 5:30 p.m. Links to follow the game can be found below:
