THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University baseball team held off a late rally from No. 24 Webber International University to earn the 4-3 win Friday night at Varnedoe Stadium.
Thomas (17-16) held the 4-0 lead through six innings, then WIU (25-12) plated one in the seventh and two in the ninth, but the Night Hawk defense left three Warriors stranded in the top of the ninth to take the victory.
TU has won five games over ranked teams this season: No. 24 Keiser, No. 4 Faulkner, No. 4 Georgia Gwinnett (twice) and No. 24 WIU.
In the ninth, TU pitcher
Hassan Westbrook walked the leadoff batter, then struck out the next batter and forced the third to fly out. But a wild pitch and a walk forced Westbrook to intentionally walk the next Warrior. With two outs, Westbrook allowed a two-RBI single, then loaded the bases with a walk. Westbrook then struck out the next batter on three pitches to end the game and pick up his seventh save of the season.
Starter
Jorge Meran earned his fourth win of the season after striking out seven, and allowing just one run from seven hits and a pair of walks.
Left fielder Maury Gonzalez was 3-for-4 with an RBI double and first baseman
Jake Bryan smacked a two-run homer in the sixth.
The Night Hawks and Warriors face off in a doubleheader on Saturday, with the first pitch at 12 p.m. at Varnedoe Stadium.
