BRUNSWICK, Ga. – No. 14 Thomas University softball got back to its winning ways with a pair of Sun Conference victories over Coastal Georgia Thursday at Brunswick HS Field.
TU, which had lost three straight after starting the conference campaign with a perfect 9-0 record, defeated the Mariners, 2-0 and 1-0, to improve to 11-3 in the league. TU is tied for second with Warner, trailing Southeastern, which is 12-4, with 10 games left to play.
The Night Hawks return to Armory Field for a four-team homestand, beginning with Southeastern at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. this Saturday. The Fire are currently receiving votes in the most recent NAIA Coaches Top 25 Poll.
Game One
Thomas scored one run in the first and added a second in the third inning to take home the 2-0 victory. Thomas' defense held Coastal Georgia scoreless, and forced the Mariners to leave nine runners on base through the final four innings.
Lauren West earned her 17th win of the season by striking out four and giving up nine hits in 7.0 innings.
Victoria Camina and
Izzy Ekstam each had two hits for the Night Hawks.
Camina singled to left and stole second base to lead off the first inning.
Kait Stoltz then sent a base hit to center field to move Camina to third. With one out,
Kelsey Connolly sent a sac fly to right, which plated TU's first run.
Camina led off the third with another base hit, this time to center field, then advanced on a sac bunt by Stoltz. With two outs, Connolly singled to second base and Camina scored on the play.
Game Two
Thomas only needed three hits to defeat CCG in the second game, as Camina connected on a triple while Stoltz and
Michael Cooper each tagged base hits.
Margarita Sena struck out two and allowed six hits in 7.0 innings to earn her fifth win of the season.
After two scoreless innings, Camina hit a two-out triple to center field, then scored on a base hit from Stoltz.
In the fourth, CCG threatened to score after a pair of base hits set up a long single to center field. But with two outs, Connolly gunned down the runner at home to keep the Mariners scoreless.
