THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Thomas University shut out Trinity Baptist (Fla.), 18-0 and 7-0, Tuesday afternoon at Varnedoe Stadium.
The Night Hawks (19-17) are riding a five-game winning streak in which TU has outscored its opponents 60-11. Thomas also defeated Trinity Baptist, 15-1 and 7-0, in a doubleheader on Feb. 6 in Jacksonville, Fla.
TU returns to Sun Conference action March 30-31 in Hardeeville, S.C., against USC Beaufort.
Game One
Thomas outhit Trinity Baptist 20-3 to take the 18-0 victory. The Night Hawks scored at least one run in each inning, topped with seven in the fourth and five in the sixth. TU saw 19 players take the field in the game.
Jalbert Melo and
Keefer Beaty each jacked home runs,
Landon Boyette hit a triple and four players tagged a double –
Jake Webb,
Taylor Westbrook,
Justin Young and
Gavin Murphy. Webb was 4-for-5 and Melo was 3-for-3 at the plate.
Chance Carter earned the win, striking out four and allowing two hits in 5.0 innings.
Melo started the scoring in the bottom of the first with a two-out solo home run.
In the second, Young hit a leadoff single, then scored after a base hit from
Wyatt Petrey and a sac fly from Murphy.
Three straight base hits and double by Westbrook in the bottom of the third gave TU the 5-0 lead.
Boyette was hit by a pitch to lead off the fourth, then Beaty connected on a two-run homer. With one out, Hinson was hit by a pitch then scored after singles from Melo and Westbrook. Melo then scored on a passed ball. Young doubled to plate Westbrook, then
Colin Kirkland came in to pinch run. Murphy drew a walk, then a triple by Boyette pushed Kirkland and Murphy across the plate.
Jake Webb led off the fifth with a base hit, then
Logan Place came in to pinch run.
Yovanny Peguero had a pinch hit single, then
Trent Miller picked up an RBI on a pinch hit single.
In the sixth, Murphy hit a leadoff double, then with two outs, Webb connected on a base hit. Hinson drew a walk then Peguero hit an RBI single, followed by a two-RBI base hit by Miller. Kirkland reached on an error to plate Peguero, then
Chris Rzewnicki hit an RBI single to wrap up the scoring for TU.
Game Two
Thomas started strong with three runs in the first, added three more in the fifth and one in the sixth to take the 7-0 win.
Melo and Place each hit home runs and Murphy tagged a pair of doubles to lead TU at the plate.
Chris Rzewnicki earned the victory, striking out one, and allowing just four hits in 6.0 innings.
In the second straight game, Melo tagged a home run, this time a three-run shot in the bottom of the first.
Place led off the fifth with a solo home run to give TU the 4-0 lead. Melo then drew a two-out walk, then base hits by Westbrook, Young and Miller plated two more Night Hawks.
In the bottom of the sixth, Place hit a one-out single, advanced on a double by Murphy and scored as Hinson sent a sac fly to right field.
