THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Senior
A.J. Weiss blasted a pair of home runs in Thomas University's 4-3 victory (8 innings) over Coastal Georgia in game two Saturday afternoon at Armory Field. TU also won the first game, 7-0.
The Night Hawks improved to 20-6 overall and 4-0 in the Sun Conference with the victories.
With two pitching wins,
Lauren West earned her 12th and 13th victories of the season. She has picked up the win in 11 of her last 12 outings and has allowed just two runs and 11 hits in her last 29.2 innings pitched.
TU next faces Ave Maria (Fla.) on March 22 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in Thomasville.
Game One
Thomas posted its ninth shutout of the season with a 7-0 win, plating three in the first, one in the second, another in the fifth and two more in the sixth inning.
West continued her winning ways, striking out four and allowing just one hit in 5.1 innings.
Kait Stoltz was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI while
Gaby Mora was 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Victoria Camina started the bottom of the first by drawing a walk, then she stole second. Stoltz hit a single to center field and stole second in time for Mora to connect on a shot to shortstop, which plated Stoltz and Camina. With two outs,
Izzy Ekstam's base hit drove in Mora.
Camina started the second inning the exact same way as the first, the scored on a base hit to shortstop by Mora.
In the bottom of the fifth, Stoltz singled to left field, stole second and advanced to third on an error. She then scored as Weiss hit a two-out single to shortstop.
TU scored two more off a double by Stoltz, which plated Olivia Garcia and Camina, who each drew walks.
Game Two
After two scoreless innings, Coastal Georgia struck first with two runs in the third, but Thomas answered with two in the fourth. In the fifth, UCG plated one, and again, Thomas answered an inning later, tying the game at three. In the bottom of the eighth, Thomas scored on a walk-off base hit down the right field line.
Weiss, who was 2-for-3, connected on her first two home runs of the season and collected three RBI while scoring two runs.
RHP
Katie Lopes started the game, allowing two runs from four hits in 2.2 innings, then Margarita Sena came in for 1.2 innings of relief, giving up one run and two hits. West finished the game, striking out six in 3.2 innings.
UCG scored two runs from three hits in the third, but TU answered with a pair of runs in the fourth.
Gaby Mora led off with a single to left field, stole second, then scored on Weiss' two-run homer.
A Thomas error and two Mariner hits gave UCG the 3-2 lead in the fifth. An inning later, Weiss sent a solo shot over the fence to tie the game.
In the eighth, Stoltz was placed on second base and advanced to third as Mora grounded out to the pitcher. A single down the right field line by
Kelsey Connolly gave TU the walkoff victory.
