TU Baseball Takes Two from Trinity Baptist

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Thomas University baseball defeated Trinity Baptist College, 15-1 and 7-0, in a midweek double header at the Trinity Ballyard in Jacksonville, Fla., on Tuesday afternoon. 

The Night Hawks have won five straight, TU's longest winning streak since 2015, and improve to 5-3 on the season with the sweep of the Eagles, who fall to 2-6.

Game One
RHP Daniel Williams picked up the win for Thomas in the first game, striking out three and forcing a pair of groundouts in 2.0 innings. 

Landon Boyette went 3-for-4, including a double, with four RBI and two runs scored, while Dominic Berlin cracked a home run on his way to a 3-for-5 outing with three RBI and two runs scored. 

After a scoreless opening frame, Thomas struck first with one run in the second inning, then piled on the offense with seven runs in the third, then six in the fourth. Trinity Baptist scored its lone run in the fifth, then Thomas answered with its final tally in the top of the next inning. Thomas scored its 15 runs on 16 hits. 

Logan Place scored TU's first run after punching a single to left, then moving around on a single from Gavin Murphy and a sac bunt by Chase Hinson. Jalbert Melo sent a sac fly to center, scoring Place and giving Thomas the early lead. 

In the third, Taylor Westbrook took a walk to open the inning and advanced to third on a single from Berlin. Wyatt Petrey was walked and Place grounded out to third, scoring Westbrook. Gavin Murphy reached on a walk, then Hinson was hit by a pitch, plating Berlin. With the bases loaded, Melo was also walked, forcing Petrey home. Boyette shot a single to right, scoring Murphy and Hinson. Melo then scored after Westbrook was dealt his second walk of the inning, and Berlin was also walked, plating Boyette. 

The fourth was highlighted by six runs from seven hits. Levi Hollingsworth took a walk, then scored after singles from Murphy and Hinson. Melo singled to left, then a double from Boyette scored Murphy and Hinson. Singles from Westbrook and Berlin, plated Melo and Boyette. With two outs, Levi Hollingsworth doubled to deep right, scoring Westbrook. 

Trinity scored one run in the fifth, after a drawn walk, a double and a groundout to second base. 

Thomas wrapped up its scoring with a home run from Berlin in the top of the sixth. 

Game Two
Thomas posted another impressive outing in the second game of the double header, shutting out Trinity Baptist, 7-0. 

RHP Chance Carter earned the victory after striking out nine and allowing just three hits in 5.0 innings. The TU pitching staff did not allow an extra base hit in game two. 

Boyette and Berlin again led the Night Hawks at the plate, as Boyette went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and Berlin was 2-for-2 with a double and one RBI. Jake Webb also cracked a double for TU. 

After another scoreless first inning, Thomas tallied five runs on four hits in the second. Berlin was hit by a pitch to start the inning, then scored after a double by Webb and a single from Petrey. Keefer Beaty, who was pinch running for Webb, also scored on Petrey's shot to center. Colin Kirkland reached on a fielder's choice, then walks to Hinson and Melo set up Boyette's single to center, which plated Kirkland and Hinson. 

In the fourth, Melo was walked, then scored after a sac bunt by Boyette, a walk to Westbrook and a pinch-hit single from Justin Young. 

In the sixth, Boyette singled to left, stole second and scored on a double to left-center field by Berlin. 



Thomas University opens Sun Conference play this weekend in Miami Gardens, Fla., where the Night Hawks will face Florida Memorial. The teams will play a double header on Friday at noon, followed by game three on Saturday, also at noon.
