Thomas University (19-26, 6-11) split a doubleheader at Ave Maria on Friday afternoon, winning the first game 3-2 before falling 7-4 in the nightcap. The two teams will square off in the rubber game on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 12:15pm.
The Night Hawks struck first in the top of the 1st inning, when
Jalbert Melo walked to lead off, moved to second on a balk, advanced to third on a
Tanner Long single, and scored on a single by
Tanner Elsbernd. With the bases loaded, TU could not score anymore, but had a 1-0 lead through 1 inning.Â
In the second inning,
Taylor Westbrook reached second on an error, and scored on a 2 out double by Long to stretch the lead to 2-0. The Gyrenes would score a run in the fourth to make the score 2-1.
In the 6th,
Gavin Murphy led off with a single, and
Dillon True came in as the courtesy runner. He would later score on a single by Elsbernd, making the score 3-1. AMU would score a run in the 8th, but that's as close as they would get as
Jordan Martin closed them out with a perfect 9th. Martin would get the complete game win, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits, 4 walks, and striking out 11.
Elsbernd would finish 3-4 with 2 RBI, and Long finished 2-4, with a double and an RBI.
In game 2, TU would again score first, taking a 2-0 lead on a Murphy double that scored
Yovanny Peguero and
Reed Melcolm. AMU would take the lead in the bottom of the third on 3 unearned runs.
In the 4th, Â
Wyatt Petrey and True would score on a Westbrook single to give the Night Hawks the lead 4-3 until the 5th when the Gyrenes scored 3 runs to grab a 6-4 lead. They would add another run in the 7th to provide the final 7-4 margin.
Holden Alexander took the loss on the mound, surrendering 6 runs (3 ER), on 6 hits while striking out 3. Murphy went 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI, and Westbrook also added 2 hits and 2 RBI.
