Thomas University (24-31, 11-13 TSC) swept a doubleheader over the Florida Memorial Lions on Saturday afternoon, winning game one 13-3 before walking off in the bottom of the 10th of game two, winning 4-3.
In game one, a 2-run homer by
Yovanny Peguero in the second inning put the Night Hawks up 2-0. They would double the lead in the 3rd inning on back-to-back blasts by
Jalbert Melo and
Tanner Long, making the score 4-0. FMU would cut the lead in half in the 4th off of TU starter
David Wood, scoring 2 runs on 2 hits, making the score 4-2.
Thomas would blow it open in the 5th, scoring 8 runs on just 4 hits and 1 error, with the big hits coming on 2-RBI singles by
Gavin Murphy and
Taylor Westbrook.
Blake Summers would add an RBI single in the 6th close out the scoring for the Night Hawks.
Justin Young would surrender an unearned run in the 7th, but preserved the run rule victory. Wood picked up the win on the mound, and Melo finished with 2 hits and 2 RBI. Murphy added 2 RBI, while Peguero tallied 3 runs and 2 RBI.
In game two, the Night Hawks would struggle to score as many runs, but would take a 1-0 lead in the first as Summers scored on a bases loaded passed ball.
Brooks Timmons would follow with an RBI groundout to make the score 2-0 after one inning. The Lions cut the lead in half in the second, and tied it in the 4th at 2-2. TU would take the 3-2 lead on Melo's second homer of the day in the sixth.
Jordan Martin would keep FMU off the board until the ninth inning, when they used a sacrifice fly to tie it at 3 apiece. TU would threaten in the bottom of the inning, but a strikeout by Long with the bases loaded would end the inning.Â
FMU would come close in the 10th off reliever
Joshua Roye, but a 4-6-3 double play with runners at the corners ended the inning and gave the Night Hawks the opportunity for their first walk-off win of the year. In the bottom of the inning, Melo walked, then stole second, followed by a walk to Murphy.
Dominic Berlin laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance the runners before an intentional walk to
Wyatt Petrey loaded the bases. Melo was cut down at the plate on a fielders choice for the second, but
Tanner Elsbernd drove a 3-1 pitch to right field for the game winning hit to score Murphy. Roye grabbed the win in relief, while Timmons was 1-2 with an RBI.
