Thomas University dropped their final midweek game of the 2017 season, falling 7-4 at Point University on Tuesday afternoon. The loss drops the Night Hawks to 22-30 overall with 3 a game series left with Florida Memorial beginning Friday to wrap up the regular season.
Point jumped out in front in the 2
nd inning, scoring a run off of TU starter
Justin Young after Young struck out the Point DH but the ball squirted away from
Gavin Murphy allowing the runner at third to score. The Skyhawks would add two more in the 3
rd off reliever
Joshua Roye on a homer and a bases loaded grounder when TU couldn't complete the double play to take a 3-0 lead through 3 innings.
The Night Hawks would answer in the 4
th when
Tanner Elsbernd walked and Murphy followed with a 2 run homer that just cleared the right field fence. TU would tie it in the 5
th after
Logan Place doubled, and
Jalbert Melo doubled with 2 out to tie the game at 3.
Jaime Rivera came on in relief in the 5
th, and surrendered 4 runs on 2 homers over two innings to give the Skyhawks a 7-3 lead. The Night Hawks would scratch out another run on a Melo double followed by an Elsbernd double to close the gap to 7-4. That was as close as they would get though as they went quietly in the ninth.
Rivera took the loss on the hill, and Melo was 2-5 with 2 doubles, and Murphy added 2 RBI.
TU is back in action on Friday, April 21, when they welcome Florida Memorial to Varnedoe Stadium for the final Sun Conference series of the year. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 5pm.
