THOMASVILLE, Ga. - The Thomas University softball team will remain at home this weekend, hosting Middle Georgia State University on Saturday and Sun Conference foe University of South Carolina-Beaufort on Sunday.
The Lady Night Hawks (11-16, 1-3 TSC) continue to fall one step short of victory. Despite dropping seven of its last eight games, Thomas was within two or fewer runs in five of those seven losses. Sophomore
Michael Cooper's batting average (.349) leads the team while sophomore pitcher
Katie Lopes (5-6) leads the Lady Night Hawks in earned run average (2.67). Junior pitcher
Ashley Chapman (3-6) leads the team in strikeouts (51).
Middle Georgia (16-19) will look to avenge their 9-2 loss to the Lady Night Hawks back in the Gulf Coast Invitational. The Lady Knights are on a three-game winning streak heading into Thomasville, Ga., pending their conference doubleheader with #2 Auburn-Montgomery on Friday. Freshman Sabrina Doucette leads the team in batting averages (.426). Junior Hannah Twilley leads the team with 27 runs batted in. Senior pitcher Alyssa Amerson (6-8) leads MGSU in earned run average (3.43) and strikeouts (72).
USC-Beaufort (18-17, 2-2 TSC) will travel to Columbia College in South Carolina on Friday before coming to Armory Field. The Lady Sand Sharks have slowly turned their season around since their midseason slump, winning 11 of their last 16 games. Senior catcher Whitley Martin leads regular batters in batting average (.406) and runs batted in (22). Senior pitcher Ashlie Layman (11-5) has an earned run average (1.30) and has struck out 112 batters. Layman's opposing batting average (.188) is NAIA's 14th best.
First pitches at Armory Field are set for 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
