Weekend Home Slate for TU Softball to Open 2016 Season

Angelo Pontello | Sports Information Intern | @apontello44

THOMASVILLE, Ga. - The opening weekend for Thomas University's softball team will feature three double-headers, as the Lady Night Hawks welcome Truett-McConnell, Georgia Gwinnett and Lindsey Wilson to Armory Field.

Last season, the Lady Night Hawks went 35-13, 12-4 TSC, finishing 23rd in the final NAIA rankings.  Their magical run came to an abrupt end in the Sun Conference Tournament, when they bowed out of the Sun Conference Tournament, after going 1-2.

The Lady Night Hawks, who received votes in the NAIA Pre-Season Poll, have a few key returners that will be counted on to contribute in a big way.  Senior outfielder Alex VanWagner finished the 2015 campaign with a .374 batting average and a team-high 31 stolen bases, while sophomore pitcher Katie Lopes led the team with a 1.75 earned run average.

In 2016, Thomas will focus on another winning season and bringing home their first ever Sun Conference title.  Head Coach Bill Wilson knows that it is going to take "a team effort" to get back to its winning ways.

Thomas will get the weekend started Friday against Truett-McConnell, who finished 23-25 in 2016 en route to a runner-up finish in the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament.

Action continues Saturday when the #21 Lady Grizzlies of Georgia-Gwinnett come to town.  GGC went 37-16 in 2015, winning their first Association of Independent Institutions Conference tournament and their first ever trip to the NAIA National tournament Opening Round.

The weekend will conclude on Sunday with a visit from the #2 ranked Lindsey Wilson Lady Raiders. LWC is coming off of a third place finish at the 2015 NAIA National Tournament, where they fell to the 2015 National Champions, Auburn-Montgomery. The Lady Raiders finished the year at 53-8.

First pitch for each day is set for 12 p.m.
