LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University softball team (5-4) split their first two games of the Green and Gray Invitation, falling 3-1 to University of Rio Grande and topping host Georgia Gwinnett College 2-0, on Saturday afternoon.

Thomas took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first of game one, after loading the bases and capitalizing on a misplayed ground ball off the bat of sophomore Michael Cooper (2-3, RBI), that brought home junior Brittany Daniels (0-3, R, BB), who had reached base on a walk. Rio would tie game and took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth. They would an insurance run in their half of the sixth to secure the victory. Sophomore Katie Lopes (3-2) went all the way in the losing effort, limiting Rio to only one earned run on five hits.

Senior starting pitcher Ashley Chapman (2-1) tossed a complete game shutout, in TU's game two win over GGC, allowing only three hits while striking out three. Thomas took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on a RBI double by Cooper. Daniels drove in an insurance run in the top of the seventh and Chapman shut the door on GGC in the bottom of the seventh for the victory.

TU will be back in action, in day two of the G & G Invite, tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. against Rio and at 4 p.m. against Georgia Gwinnett.
