Box Score Thomasville, Ga. – The TU women's basketball team (12-11, 7-6) iced the first place Southeastern University Fire's (20-5, 11-3) four game winning streak and put themselves back in the driver's seat for a Sun Conference Tournament opening round game with a 70-64 win on Wednesday night at the Thomas University Gymnasium.
SEU & TU exchanged baskets in the early going and every time the Fire tried to pull away, Thomas had a response to keep matters close. With thirty seconds to play, junior
Rayven Thomas dropped a mid-range jumper, to make it a one point affair. Southeastern responded with a three to make it a 19-15 game but senior
Bria Joyner-Williams answered with a long range two at the buzzer. The teams again exchanged points to open the second quarter before Southeastern opened their largest lead of the game, 27-19, with seven to play in the half. At the 6:20 mark, a three pointer by sophomore
Tess Wright made it a five point game and Williams made it a three point game, one minute later. A lay-up, at the buzzer, by junior
Shaunice Bennett, sent the three point game into the changing rooms.
The tussle continued, as the teams opened the third quarter. With seven minutes to play, Williams knocked down a two to give the Lady Night Hawks their first lead of the game at 39-38. Wright would bank a three pointer, from downtown, giving TU a four point lead with 6:25 to play. The teams would, once again exchange leads down the stretch of the third quarter and three pointer by Williams gave TU a 49-48 advantage heading into the fourth. Thomas held the lead thru the early part of the fourth, eventually opening up their biggest margin of the night, when freshman
De'Audra Copeland knocked down a three for a 62-53 advantage with 5:30 to play. SEU closed the margin to three but clutch free throws by the Lady Night Hawks closed out the game.
Williams led all shooters with 18 points, while Bennett knocked in 15. Senior Ali Bra'shey (12 points) was the only other Lady Night Hawks with double digit scoring. Eight different players scored for TU.
Thomas will honor their seniors this coming Saturday, when they welcome the St. Thomas University Bobcats to the TU Gymnasium for the second last to last TSC game of the year. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
