COCHRAN, Ga. – The Thomas University baseball team dropped the series-deciding contest with Middle Georgia State this afternoon being shutout in a 10-0 Knights' victory. The loss puts the Night Hawks at 1-2 for the season as Middle Georgia picked up the series win.
In his first start as a Night Hawk, senior transfer
Jordan Martin carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth inning until it was broken up by Blake Chaney's single to shallow center. An inning later, newcomer
Nick Riley replaced Martin, who was pulled to maintain a low pitch count just three games into the 2016 season, on the mound for Thomas. The Knights welcomed the right-handed hurler to the game with three singles that eventually plated the first Knight run of the game.
Thomas struggled at the plate throughout the contest as the Night Hawks only picked up five hits the entire game.
Middle Georgia went back to work at the plate in the bottom of the seventh scoring six more runs to take the 7-0 lead.
The Knights' offense caught fire again just an inning later when they went on to score three more runs. Reliever Whit Campbell forced a pop up and then struck out the final two batters in the top of the ninth to give Middle Georgia the 10-0 victory.
Thomas'
Nick Riley was credited with the loss while MGSU's Austin Bowker received the win.
"It was good to pick up a victory this weekend, but we have got a lot of work to do," commented head coach
Mike Lee.
The Night Hawks return to action on Friday, Feb. 5 when they welcome Trinity Baptist College to Varnedoe Stadium for their 2016 home opener. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
