NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – Behind the 15-point performance of freshman
Dymon Brown and the seventh and fourth double-double of the season by
Bria Joyner-Williams (12 pts., 10 rebs.) and
Rayven Thomas (14 pts., 10 rebs.), respectively, the Thomas University women's basketball team jumped back in the win column this evening defeating Johnson & Wales on the road 90-62.
Â
Thomas led from the tip as they marched off to an 11-0 run to begin the game. Conversely, the Lady Wildcats did not connect offensively until three and half minutes into the game. Johnson & Wales' offense continued to struggle in the opening frame as Thomas built a 17-point, 26-9 advantage.
Â
The Lady Wildcats showed signs of adjustment and life in the second quarter outscoring Thomas 21-20. The effort during the second frame was the lone quarter of action in which JWU outscored Thomas.
Â
Heading out of the intermission with the 46-30 lead, the Lady Night Hawks continued to push the tempo offensively and forced several turnovers by the JWU unit. As a result, the Lady Night Hawks increased their lead to 64-42 after three periods.
Â
The Hunter Green and White's scoring gap reached its height of 34, 86-52, with 2:48 left in the fourth. From there, Thomas backed off the pressure heading to the buzzer. At the horn, the Lady Night Hawks picked up their third Sun Conference victory of the year improving to 8-8, 3-3 TSC, overall on the season.
Â
For the second game in a row, the Lady Night Hawks had five or more players scoring in double figures. Brown led the way with 15 points while
Rayven Thomas and
Shaunice Bennett both contributed 14 points each in the winning effort. Nicole Dixon led JWU in the loss. The 5-foot-5 shooting guard dropped 18 points en route to leading all scorers on the night.
Â
"Tonight was a great all-around team effort," stated head coach
Coretta Brown. "We had six out of our eight players in double figures and simply stated, they played as a unit. We'll celebrate this win tonight and then prepare for a tough AMU squad as they have been playing extremely well in their last three contest."
Â
